Crushing It!

I can’t believe this worked! I have a faint memory of a fun 4H project from a million years ago. We used rubber stamps and velvet fabric. I couldn’t remember all the details, so I just decided to try it and hope it worked!

I made those two patchwork samples from the blog a couple of weeks ago into pillow tops. I thought it would be pretty to use velvet as the backing and try this stamping technique to “crush” a design into it.

I found this cute stamp of a flower with a semi-open design. It has to be a rubber stamp, plastic stamps will melt all over the fabric.

I cut a piece of the velvet a couple of inches bigger than the top and placed it fuzzy side down onto the rubber stamp.

Using a steam iron, I pressed from the backside of the velvet through to the rubber. I held the iron in place for 5-7 seconds, then pressed with my fingers while it was still warm to get the velvet crushed into the divots of the stamp.

Just look at that impression! It actually worked!

I kept moving the stamp randomly, to fill in open areas, until I had the whole piece stamped with flowers.

Here they are ready to put the back on. I put an invisible zipper in the bottom seam, so I didn’t have to split the backing.

Doesn’t that look rich?! I'm so pleased with how this experiment turned out!

What else could this idea could be used for? I’m thinking of velvet Christmas stockings or those pretty wine bags you give with a bottle of wine. I saw some cute Christmas stamps that would be perfect!

Happy Sunday everyone,

Krista
